Short answer: This is expected. Apple's debugging technote says direct navigation in the Safari address bar is never treated as a universal link. Your file may be fine. Test by tapping the link in Notes or Messages, where it should open the app.
What is happening
Direct navigation: a URL the user types or pastes into the browser address bar, which iOS always opens in the browser even when a universal link rule matches it.
Universal links respond to a tap on a link. When the user enters a URL themselves, iOS assumes they want the web page. This is the most common false alarm in universal link testing, because pasting a link into Safari is the first thing many people try.
- The same URL tapped from Notes, Messages or Mail opens the app.
sudo swcutil verifyon a Mac printsPattern "..." matched., because nothing is wrong with the file.
Why does this happen?
Apple treats typing a URL as a clear choice to visit the website, so it does not hand that navigation to an app. It is a design decision, documented in Apple's TN3155 technote, not a configuration error.
A related behaviour catches people out: a user can also choose to open a domain in the browser from the long-press menu. Apple says that choice "will set the default behavior for your device", so later taps on that device open Safari too. If one device always opens the website, long-press the link in Notes and choose the app option to reset it.
How to confirm it
- Paste the URL into the Notes app and tap it. If the app opens, universal links work.
- Long-press the link in Notes. Both an app option and a browser option should appear.
- On a device with Developer Mode on, go to Settings > Developer > Universal Links > Diagnostics and enter the URL to see whether it matches.
- On a Mac, run
sudo swcutil verify -d example.com -j apple-app-site-association -u https://example.com/your/path.
How to fix it
- No server change is needed for typed links. Stop testing by pasting into Safari.
- Build your test list around taps: Notes, Messages, Mail and a web page on a different domain.
- If one device opens Safari on every tap, reset the choice: long-press the link in Notes and choose the app option.
- If taps also fail, check the file with
curl -I https://example.com/.well-known/apple-app-site-associationandsudo swcutil verify, then work through the universal links setup guide.
Quick tap test (iOS)
1. Open Notes, paste https://example.com/product/1
2. Tap the link: the app should open
3. Long-press the link: "Open in <App>" should be listed
If taps from your own website fail as well, see same-domain navigation. Links tapped inside social apps are covered in in-app browsers.
